Introduction
Vivecraft is the mod that transforms Minecraft into an exceptional VR experience in room-scale or seated play. Optimized for standing play with motion controllers, also supports seated play with mouse & keyboard. Vivecraft requires a robust gaming PC for acceptable performance and does not work with integrated Intel graphics. To learn more, visit the Vivecraft homepage.
This article contains two sets of instructions:
- One-time initial configuration of your hardware & software.
- Steps performed each play session to launch your VR headset & launch Vivecraft.
Setup Your PC and Minecraft
The following instructions were written for my specific hardware setup, including:
If these steps don’t work for you, please don’t reach out to me (I’m a dad who knows just enough to be dangerous). Instead, I recommend reaching out to the Vivecraft Discord’s #support channel, whose community proved helpful in getting me this far.
Before You Begin
- Validate your versions. The latest Vivecraft version does not always keep up with latest Minecraft GA version. For example, as of January 8, 2023, the most-current Minecraft Java version was v1.19.3, while Vivecraft goes up only to v1.19.2.
- Validate your hardware. If your PC only has an Intel integrated GPU, then you cannot play Vivecraft as VR on OpenGL is not supported by Intel drivers.
- Setup Steam. Vivecraft will require SteamVR as its runtime VR (versus the default OpenXL). Before starting, be sure to install Steam (and setup an account, if you don’t already have one), then include the SteamVR app within your Steam Library.
- Confirm your power supply is adequate. Because Minecraft Java is not VR optimized, your laptop & power supply unit (PSU) may run hot attempting to keep up with graphical demands. For example, the Legion 5 ships with a 230W slim power supply they rate for “high gaming” (whatever that means). Although it will get hot, it won’t get hot enough to be dangerous. Instead, if more power is needed, it will begin to rob the battery as well. Depending on how problematic that becomes, I may upgrade to a 300W PSU at some point
